Steve left us on Tuesday, 24 September 2024, after a courageous battle with his illness. Steve had his loving partner Cheryl Crooks at his side throughout.
Steve was born in Wellington in 1955. He was the adored youngest and fourth child of Winifred Hinds (nee Phillips), and Philip Hinds.
Steve was a kind and compassionate man, who was surrounded by the love of his family and his beloved late wife Helen Maureen Hinds (nee McLaughlin). His older siblings the late Margaret, Brian and Pauline all adored their younger brother. An inspiring Uncle and “older brother” to all his nieces and nephews, including the late Carolynne Craig Whitton.
Steve has been a very supportive brother-in-law to Paul and Margaret O’Flaherty, Jamie and the late Patricia Simpkin, Janice Hinds, Royden & Tina Crooks and Matthew Crooks.
Steve had a very full life serving both his country through his distinguished Policing career, and the Police community as President of the Police Association and as a Director of the Police and Families Credit Union Board for many years.
Steve also represented the city that he loved, as the force who locked the Wellington scrum between 1976 and 1985, and he was a Marist St Pats playing legend. He showed that the second row is made of strong stuff.
He was one of global rugby’s most respected and experienced Citing Commissioners, and in recent years Steve has developed and led the global team of Citing Commissioners for World Rugby. His Citing Commissioner team and World Rugby colleagues feel the loss of the man they love and respect.
Steve was a big man with a huge heart, always putting others needs before his own including during his recent illness.
We are all blessed to have known and to have had this best of all men in our lives.
A mass to celebrate Steve’s life will be held at Our Lady of Kapiti Catholic Church, 1 Presentation Way, Paraparaumu, on Wednesday 2nd October, at 10:00am, followed by a private family burial. The service will be live streamed for those unable to attend https://youtube.com/live/MwXaDMO8BBM

Please, don’t send flowers, but donate to the charity that Steve actively supported for many years – the Fred Hollows Foundation https://www.hollows.org.nz/donate.
